The International Space Station (ISS) is bustling with activity as it accommodates a record-breaking eight spacecraft simultaneously. This unprecedented scenario mirrors the post-Thanksgiving feeling of fullness, as the station's docking ports are fully occupied for the first time in its history. NASA officials announced this milestone on December 1, marking a significant moment in space exploration.
The Soyuz crew played a crucial role in this development. Mission Control at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston utilized the ISS' robotic Canadarm2 to maneuver Northrop Grumman's Cygnus-23 cargo spacecraft, ensuring it had the necessary clearance for the incoming crewed spacecraft. Cygnus-23 was then repositioned at the Earth-facing port of the station's Unity module, making it the second spacecraft in the lineup.
Another Soyuz vehicle, Soyuz MS-27, is also docked at the ISS, specifically at the Russian Prichal module. However, its stay is coming to an end. Soyuz MS-27 is scheduled to depart the ISS on December 8, carrying NASA astronaut Jonny Kim and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, with a planned landing in Kazakhstan soon after.
The remaining five spacecraft are the Russian Progress-92 and Progress-93 robotic cargo spacecraft, residing at the Russian Poisk and Zvezda modules, respectively. The Japanese HTV-X1 cargo craft is berthed at the nadir port of the station's Harmony Node 2. Additionally, two SpaceX Dragon capsules are docked at the two other ports on Harmony, designated for visiting spacecraft. One of these is the Commercial Resupply Services-33 (CRS-33) robotic cargo capsule, while the other is the Crew-11 Dragon, positioned at the space-facing port of Harmony.
Crew-11 is an astronaut mission, comprising NASA's Zena Cardman and Michael Fincke, Kimiya Yui from the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and Oleg Platonov from Roscosmos. They are part of the Expedition 73 long-duration astronauts on the ISS and will return to Earth in 2026. This diverse crew brings a wealth of expertise and perspectives to the station, contributing to the ongoing research and exploration efforts.
