The Phillies' spring training is a crucial time, and Aaron Nola is determined to make a powerful comeback. With a history of both playoff droughts and World Series glory, this city's expectations are high, and Nola is ready to deliver.
For the past three years, the Phillies have been on a rollercoaster ride, and Nola, as the longest-serving player, has experienced it all. From throwing an impressive 194 innings between 2021 and 2024 to a challenging 2025 season with injuries and a mere 94 1/3 innings, Nola is eager to bounce back and prove his worth.
Nola's 2025 season was a tough one. He battled injuries, including a sprained ankle and a stress fracture in his rib, which limited his starts and impacted his performance. Despite these setbacks, Nola finished the season on a high note, feeling 100% and delivering a strong performance in his last regular-season start. But he wasn't content to rest on his laurels; he made a conscious decision to change his offseason routine to ensure a stronger start in Clearwater.
"The offseason was a time for growth and learning," Nola shared in an interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia's Phillies Talk podcast. "I started my training earlier, gradually easing into it. I wanted to give my body the time it needed to repair and recover, and I feel stronger than ever coming into spring training."
The Phillies' offseason moves have been a topic of debate, with some fans disappointed despite the re-signing of key veterans like Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto. However, Nola remains confident in the team's ability to win it all.
"The ultimate goal is to win the World Series," he said. "We have a great group of guys, and we know it. People might have wanted new faces, but we brought back J.T. and Kyle for a reason. They're core members of this team, and we need their leadership and talent."
The Phillies have proven themselves as a 95-win ballclub, winning consecutive NL East division titles. But Nola understands that success doesn't come easily.
"I've been through the rebuilding process with this organization," he explained. "There were years when we knew we weren't going to make the playoffs, but we kept fighting. Then, in 2022, we finally broke through and got hot. No one expected us to reach the World Series, but now the expectations are higher. We know we're a good team, but we have to go out there and prove it."
Consistency, production, and staying healthy are the keys to their success. With a veteran-heavy lineup, it's a delicate balance, but Nola believes in their ability to stick to their plans and play as a cohesive unit.
"It won't be easy," he acknowledged. "Winning the division and making the playoffs is not a guarantee. But we have the experience and the talent to do it. We know how to play together, and that's our advantage."
As the Phillies gear up for the regular season, the pressure is on. Can they live up to the high expectations? Only time will tell, but with Aaron Nola leading the charge, they have a fighting chance.
