Former BioWare executive Casey Hudson has launched a new Canadian game studio, Arcanaut Studios, marking a significant milestone in the gaming industry. Established in July 2025, the studio is set to develop Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a highly anticipated sequel to the iconic BioWare game, Knights of the Old Republic. Hudson, a veteran game developer, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having worked at BioWare for 16 years and previously directed the original KOTOR. With a team of talented individuals, including Chris Bain, Cordy Rierson, and Ryan Hoyle, Arcanaut Studios aims to redefine the Star Wars gaming experience.
The announcement of Fate of the Old Republic at The Game Awards last week sparked excitement among fans. Hudson expressed his vision for the game, stating, 'We wanted to create a definitive Star Wars experience, an adventure that embodies the dreams of every Star Wars fan.' This ambition is evident in the game's contemporary approach, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and game design, while crafting a new story that emphasizes player agency and immersion. The original KOTOR, released 25 years ago, set a high bar, and Hudson's team is determined to meet and exceed expectations.
However, Hudson's journey in the gaming industry has not been without challenges. He previously left BioWare in 2014 and later rejoined in 2017, only to depart again in 2021 alongside Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah. Together, they founded Humanoid Origin, a studio that developed an untitled sci-fi game. Unfortunately, Humanoid closed last year, bringing an end to the development of that project. Despite these setbacks, Hudson's passion and expertise in the industry remain unwavering, and Arcanaut Studios is poised to make a significant impact on the gaming landscape.
