In a recent court decision, a 61-year-old dual national, Pairat Junsomran, has been granted bail and the controversial green light to travel to Thailand, despite being charged with a fatal hit-and-run incident in Darwin.
The incident occurred on Bagot Road in Darwin on December 27, when a 27-year-old Indigenous woman was tragically struck by a car driven by Mr. Junsomran. She passed away at the scene before emergency services arrived.
Seven days after the crash, Mr. Junsomran was arrested and charged with hit-and-run causing death. His lawyer, Samuel Naylor, emphasized his client's lack of criminal record and strong ties to the Darwin community, including a family home in the city's northern suburbs.
Naylor argued that Mr. Junsomran's cooperation with the police, including voluntarily driving the vehicle to the station for forensic testing, demonstrated his commitment to the investigation. He also highlighted the pre-arranged trip to Thailand, scheduled for January 6, as a planned event that predated the incident.
The prosecution lawyer, Bryce Luck, did not oppose bail, acknowledging Mr. Junsomran's community ties and lack of a flight risk. Judge John Bortoli agreed to bail with conditions, including passport surrender upon Mr. Junsomran's return to Australia on February 7 and a requirement to remain in the Northern Territory after his return from Thailand.
The case has been adjourned until March 4, leaving a trail of questions and debates among the public.
