Enea Bastianini's Sepang MotoGP Test: A Step Forward, But Challenges Remain
Enea Bastianini made significant strides in the Sepang test, slicing a second off his qualifying time compared to the Malaysian MotoGP last October. This improvement is a notable shift for the Tech3 KTM rider, who has historically struggled in qualifying, with an average grid position of 16th.
Despite his progress, Bastianini's Sprint performance revealed ongoing challenges. He managed to secure a rostrum appearance in both a Sprint and a Grand Prix, but the gap to the front-runners was often too wide to bridge on Saturday mornings.
Team manager Nicolas Goyon viewed Bastianini's 11th place on the combined timesheets as a positive outcome, especially considering the 0.8-second gap to leader Alex Marquez and the 0.2-second difference to the top KTM rider, Pedro Acosta.
This test also marked a successful debut for Bastianini's new partnership with crew chief Andres Madrid, previously working with Brad Binder at the factory team. The focus was on building confidence and comfort for Bastianini and Madrid, with Goyon noting their hard work and dedication over three days, covering over 120 laps.
Bastianini, who set a best lap time of 1m 57.290s, expressed satisfaction with the test, highlighting their focus on bike ergonomics, setup, and aerodynamics. However, he acknowledged the need to close the gap to the leading riders, as they faced challenges with lap times in the 56s range.
The Sprint simulation further exposed a significant gap, both to Acosta and the leading Ducatis. Bastianini attributed this to a lack of turning, a critical aspect for achieving good lap times. He also mentioned a small rear tire issue, causing vibrations, which they have partially resolved.
Looking ahead, the final pre-season test is scheduled for Buriram on February 21-22, where Bastianini and his team will continue to refine their performance and address the remaining challenges.
With a mix of progress and persistent issues, Bastianini's journey in the MotoGP continues, leaving fans and experts alike intrigued about his future performances.
