Apple's latest iPhone update, iOS 26.2.1, has been released unexpectedly, bringing a range of new features and improvements. Unlike minor updates, this one includes support for the second-generation AirTag, which has an Ultra Wideband chip for greater Precision Finding range, an improved Bluetooth chip, a distinctive new chime, and is 50% louder than its predecessor. This update also works with child-safe batteries, a feature not available in earlier AirTag models. Additionally, it requires Apple Watch Series 9 or later or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later to connect directly to the watch. The update is primarily focused on bug fixes, with no security updates included, which is unusual for minor releases. This release is available for all iPhones from 2019 onwards, including the iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generations), and the iPhone 17 series. To download and install iOS 26.2.1, open the Settings app, go to General, then Software Update, and follow the prompts. The update is a moderate-sized file, weighing 838.9MB on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and typically takes less than 10 minutes to download and install. It's important to note that while iPhones 11 to 16 can run iOS 18, there are no more updates for those devices, and iOS 26 is the latest version they can run. Apple also released iOS 18.7.4 alongside iOS 26.2.1, but this update is restricted to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, which can run iOS 18 but not iOS 26.
