In the realm of local sports, 2025 has been a remarkable year, marked by exciting developments for two talented baseball players. On July 14, Mason Ligenza took a significant step towards fulfilling his lifelong aspiration of becoming a professional baseball player. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who recently claimed the World Series title, selected him as the 195th overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft, specifically in the sixth round. This moment was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication that began when he first slipped on a baseball uniform.
Reflecting on his journey, Ligenza shared, "This past summer and fall, I participated in events where many eyes were focused on me, and those experiences have been some of the most enjoyable moments of my life." However, he candidly admitted the pressure that came with being under the watchful gaze of scouts attending his high school games, saying, "I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous when I saw them show up to watch me play."
Throughout his high school career, Ligenza demonstrated extraordinary skills both as a hitter and a pitcher, entering the draft as MLB.com’s 217th best prospect. In his senior season, the 6-foot-6, 205-pound recruit for the University of Pittsburgh achieved impressive stats, boasting a .448 batting average (26 hits out of 58 at-bats) as the leadoff hitter for the Blue Raiders. He led his team with an outstanding on-base percentage of .644, along with 11 home runs, 44 runs, 29 walks, and 27 stolen bases.
As a left-handed pitcher, Ligenza finished with a remarkable record of 7 wins and 1 loss, maintaining an astonishing earned run average of just 0.25. He struck out 100 batters while only walking 14 across 55 and one-third innings. Over the entire season, he allowed only nine runs, with just two being earned, contributing significantly to the Raiders' impressive 21-2 record and their successful defense of the Schuylkill League championship. A highlight of his pitching career came during a perfect game he delivered against Panther Valley in his final regular-season appearance.
Ultimately, Ligenza opted to further his baseball journey at Pitt instead of diving straight into professional play—at least for the time being. He emphasized the importance of living in the present, stating, "I think it is essential to live in the moment and stay focused on what is happening now, which is improving every day with my team and aiming to win every game we play. If I remain mindful and concentrated on the present, everything will unfold as it is meant to in the future. However, I can't help but ponder the 'what ifs' of the future, so having open discussions with my parents, my advisor, and those close to me while also praying about it is crucial."
As for Bryce Molinaro, his long-awaited moment finally arrived in the draft, marking a joyous occasion after years of hard work and determination. The Washington Nationals recognized the former Hazleton Area two-sport star and All-Big Ten baseball player from Penn State by selecting him as the 501st pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. This selection followed closely after the Nationals had chosen shortstop Eli Willits from Fort Cobb-Broxton, Oklahoma, as the first overall pick just a day earlier.
"I spent the entire day waiting for the call, and when it came, all my emotions hit me at once. It truly felt like a dream come true," Molinaro expressed, reflecting on the journey that led him to this pivotal moment. "It showed that all my efforts over the years have indeed paid off."
Molinaro, known for his powerful hitting as a third baseman and a smooth right-handed swing, has been on the radar as a promising prospect since a young age. He entered the season ranked 143rd overall among college prospects by D1Baseball.com, and 380th in the Baseball America top-400 rankings. Despite these accolades, Molinaro found solace in conversations with second-year Nittany Lions head coach Mike Gambino, which helped alleviate the pressure of being an elite prospect.
In May, even as the draft approached, Molinaro managed to keep his focus on the game rather than letting the impending event distract him. However, he understood that receiving a single phone call could significantly alter the course of his life, and he acknowledged the incredible path he has traveled from wrestling mats to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, where he has established a legacy.
"It would mean the world to me to be drafted. It’s what I’ve been working for since I was a kid, and to hear my name called would be a major milestone, something to check off my bucket list. It would definitely be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," he said before the draft.
Yet, similar to Ligenza, Molinaro decided to pause his dream of playing professional baseball for the moment. Shortly after the draft, he announced via social media that he would return to Penn State for the 2026 season instead of signing with the Nationals. In a heartfelt post, he explained that his decision followed thoughtful discussions with his family and coaches. He expressed gratitude to Nittany Nation for their unwavering support throughout the season, stating, "I’m coming back with determination to excel on the field and continue my development under coach Gambino and his excellent staff. I can’t wait to reunite with my teammates at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park."
