A long-standing battle has finally come to an end, and it's a victory for architectural heritage! The Brutalist Southbank Centre, a concrete masterpiece, has been listed as a Grade II building after an astonishing 35 years of resistance. This decision, a triumph for the Twentieth Century Society, marks a turning point in how we perceive and protect our post-war architectural legacy.
The Southbank Centre, designed by the London County Council Special Works Group, has been a subject of controversy and debate for decades. When it first opened in 1967, it was voted 'Britain's ugliest building' by Daily Mail readers. Yet, despite this initial backlash, the centre has grown to be admired as one of the finest examples of Brutalist architecture worldwide.
But here's where it gets controversial... For years, successive culture secretaries refused to grant the centre heritage protection, rejecting Historic England's recommendations on six separate occasions. The DCMS even went as far as to say that the building's architecture was 'not unique or groundbreaking'.
However, the heritage body and architectural enthusiasts didn't give up. They argued that the centre's bold geometric formations, use of exposed concrete, and its sophisticated juxtaposition of materials made it a significant representation of Brutalism in England.
And this is the part most people miss... The Southbank Centre is more than just a concrete structure. It's a vibrant arts complex, home to the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, and Hayward Gallery. These venues, with their unique, virtuoso spaces, have hosted countless concerts and exhibitions, enriching the cultural landscape of the country.
After a long and arduous campaign, the heritage minister, Fiona Twycross, finally accepted Historic England's reasons for listing. The decision was a mature recognition of a style where Britain once led the way.
