Get ready for a wild ride as Warner Bros. takes a leap of faith with their latest animation venture! In a surprising move, the studio is diving headfirst into a full-length feature film centered around the iconic Speedy Gonzales, the speedy mouse with a heart of gold. But here's the twist: this project is being helmed by none other than Jorge R. Gutierrez, the creative mind behind the enchanting 'The Book of Life'.
Warner Bros. Discovery's recent handling of the beloved Looney Tunes brand has been, let's say, an interesting journey. Since its merger in 2022, the studio has taken some bold steps to distance itself from its classic animation roots. From offloading its library of golden-era cartoons to Tubi, to shelving potential HBO Max films like 'Coyote Vs. Acme', and even selling distribution rights for 'Looney Tunes' movies to smaller companies, it's been a rocky road. So, why now, with all this controversy surrounding the brand, is Warner Bros. Pictures Animation taking a chance on Speedy Gonzales?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gutierrez, who has been under an exclusive deal with Netflix, has been dropping hints about this project for a while now. And now, it's official! Bill Damaschke, president of WBPA, expressed their excitement about Gutierrez's reimagining of Speedy Gonzales for a modern, global audience.
Speedy Gonzales, a character born in the 1950s, has a rich history. His first official short even won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film! Most recently, he made an appearance in the 2021 film 'Space Jam: A New Legacy', where he was voiced by comedian Gabriel Iglesias. But this isn't the first time Warner Bros. has attempted to bring Speedy to the big screen. In the 2010s, they tried to develop a film with Eugenio Derbez, another talented actor from 'The Book of Life', but the project was shelved due to concerns over political correctness and the character's potential ethnic stereotype. Derbez, in a 2024 interview, defended Speedy, saying, 'He's a hero, a smart one at that! He outsmarts the cats and provides for his people. What's not to love?'
So, will Gutierrez's vision for Speedy Gonzales be a hit or miss? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: this project is sure to spark some interesting conversations and debates. What do you think? Is Speedy Gonzales a beloved character or a controversial stereotype? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
