A top Welsh surgeon has issued a stark warning about the 'life-changing' consequences of a common cold remedy, highlighting the dangers of steam inhalation. The consultant, Dr. Jeremy Yarrow, warns that children are particularly at risk from this unproven home remedy, which involves inhaling steam from boiled water. He explains that the method poses significant dangers as bowls of scalding water can overturn without warning, causing severe burns to the face, chest, abdomen, and legs. These injuries can lead to prolonged treatment or surgical intervention and are especially dangerous for children due to their thinner skin and lack of awareness of the danger. Dr. Yarrow emphasizes that the practice lacks proven effectiveness and encourages people to pursue safer alternatives. A Cochrane medical review also found no clear benefits for using steam inhalation for treating such illnesses. He urges the public to avoid using steam inhalation as a remedy for common colds and respiratory infections, instead recommending over-the-counter or prescribed remedies. In the event of a burn injury, Dr. Yarrow advises acting quickly to reduce the potential for long-term injury or scarring, suggesting the '3Cs' of cooling the burn with running cold tap water, removing clothing and jewelry, and calling for help. Additionally, he reminds people to take care when using hot water bottles, as they can also lead to burns and scalds.
