UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup: Vanthourenhout's Sand Skills Shine in Terralba Victory (2026)

UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup Terralba: A Thrilling Showdown

Michael Vanthourenhout claimed his first World Cup victory in the third round of the 2025-2026 season, showcasing his exceptional sand skills in the challenging Terralba, Sardinia race. After a crash a few weeks prior, Vanthourenhout's triumph was all the more remarkable.

The Pauwels Sauzen-Altez Industriedbouw rider demonstrated his prowess on the course, which featured a fast 3.1 km route with sand sections, park loops, village streets, and lagoon-side straights. Starting in Marceddì, the 36 riders faced a demanding route with multiple sand sectors, winding park passages, a staircase by the church, and a final unpaved run to the finish.

Joris Nieuwenhuis (Ridley Racing Team) led the field onto the course, but it was Vanthourenhout who made his move, powering away from a group of six riders. He sprinted off and onto his bike on stairs, showcasing his versatility and determination. Despite the presence of deep puddles from previous rainy days, Vanthourenhout held off his pursuers on the unpaved straightaway to the finish line.

"It was a truly difficult week, but I'm thrilled to be back fighting for the win," Vanthourenhout said. "I felt I was better on the sand sections, and I gave it my all in the last lap."

The race saw a fierce battle between Belgian and Dutch riders. Laurens Sweeck, a Crelan-Corendon rider, finished third, cutting his deficit to overall leader Thibau Nys to just four points. The race was a testament to the competitive spirit of the sport, with riders pushing each other to their limits.

The Terralba race, held at a new venue after last year's Sardinia round was cancelled, featured a fast and technical course. The front group, including Pim Ronhaar, Ryan Kamp, Niels Vandeputte, Victor van de Putte, Mees Hendrikx, and the trio of Laurens Sweeck, Joran Wyseure, and Toon Vandebosch, showcased the high level of skill and determination among the riders.

Vanthourenhout's victory was a result of his exceptional performance and strategic moves, particularly on the sand sections. His win marked a significant achievement in his career, and he is sure to be a contender for future races.
