War Is Over! - Oscar-Winning Animated Short | Chess-Themed, Inspired by John Lennon & Yoko Ono (2025)

A Chess Game That Could End a War — And Win an Oscar.

What happens when a simple board game becomes the only thread connecting enemies across the battlefield? That’s the haunting premise behind War Is Over!, the Academy Award-winning animated short that’s now finally available for everyone to watch on YouTube. But here’s where it gets even more powerful — this release isn’t just entertainment; it’s also raising money for children trapped in real-world conflict zones through the charity War Child.

Inspired by John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s timeless anti-war anthem Happy Xmas (War Is Over!), the 11-minute film unfolds during an alternate version of World War I. It follows two soldiers, Winston and Abel, positioned on opposite sides of the front lines. Despite the chaos around them, they find an unexpected sanctuary through an emotional game of correspondence chess — each move carried across no-man’s land by a messenger pigeon named Icarus. It’s a poetic reminder that even amid destruction, connection and humanity can still take flight.

This striking project marks the second time a chess-themed short has taken home an Oscar for Best Animated Short — the first being Pixar’s Geri’s Game in 1998. And for devoted chess fans, there’s also a nod to history: the film includes a dramatic reversed-color reenactment of Efim Bogoljubov’s famous 1950 game against A.H. Trott in Southsea, known for its remarkable “check-answered-by-checkmate” twist. To ensure accuracy, the production enlisted esteemed chess historian Edward Winter as a consultant.

Yoko Ono, now 92, serves as the film’s executive producer — and her lifelong passion for chess is well-documented. She famously played with Lennon in their 1972 music video Don’t Count The Waves. Her son, Sean Ono Lennon, co-wrote the script with director Dave Mullins and emphasized that the team’s decision to make the short freely accessible was motivated by the desire to raise awareness and funds for War Child. “We’d be honored if you help us share this film and continue John and Yoko’s message,” Lennon said. “Because, truly, war is over — if you want it.”

Helen Pattinson, CEO of War Child UK, praised the film as “an incredibly moving piece of art,” stressing that it captures both the devastation of war and the enduring cost borne by children. “Right now, in places like Gaza, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, families are battling the cold and fear every single day,” she noted. “Every donation counts — this winter, it’s not the thought that matters, but the action.”

And this is the part most people miss — War Is Over! isn’t merely a story about a game; it’s a call to remember our shared humanity, one strategic move at a time. Could a short film about chess make people believe in peace again, even for a moment? Watch it, and decide for yourself — then share your thoughts. Can art still move us to act, or have we become too desensitized to listen?
