Bold statement: Home Alone didn’t just become a holiday staple—it almost rewrote the careers of its future stars. Now, 35 years later, it remains a worldwide Christmas favorite, stacking memories of family, holiday spirit, and clever home defense with a sprinkle of slapstick genius. But the core magic almost looked very different.
Many legendary names were considered for key roles, including one of cinema’s all-time greats, James Stewart. A post from the Academy Museum on TikTok reveals archivist Louise Hilton sharing casting materials that name several contenders. Stewart, who already fits the mold of a beloved Christmas icon thanks to It’s A Wonderful Life, was eyed for Old Man Marley. Ultimately, the filmmakers chose Robert Blossom instead, even though Stewart’s agent was interested and he was available.
The film’s major roles also faced intriguing near-misses. The plan called for an older Harry and a younger Marv, and a memo even suggested that Tim Curry and Dan Stern would make an exciting duo. Joe Pesci had been offered the part of Harry (and did not audition), but the team initially doubted he’d accept—yet he did, paired with Stern, and the rest is cinematic history. Curry would later play the Plaza Hotel concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
When it came to Kevin’s parents, Kate and Peter McAllister, a few prominent actors were considered before Catherine O’Hara and John Heard landed the roles. Names like Susan Sarandon, Blythe Danner, Joanna Cassidy, and Kirstie Alley circulated for Kate, while Sam Waterston and David Dukes were in contention for Peter.
The final cast, though, is often cited as nearly perfect. Each performer slides into place with a natural chemistry that anchors the film’s warmth and humor. Joe Pesci’s history of portraying tough guys lends a convincing menace to Harry, which he balances with sharp physical comedy. His partnership with Dan Stern’s Marv—one sense of older skepticism paired with younger, more reckless energy—feels expertly calibrated. Blossom’s moments with Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin introduce a tender sweetness, tempered by a real sense of danger before the truth comes to light, something that might have felt different with James Stewart in that role.
Above all, Catherine O’Hara as Kate remains the linchpin. The mother-son dynamic is the emotional core of the first two films, and the on-screen rapport between O’Hara and Culkin is what elevates those scenes. Her expressive delivery—especially the unforgettable shout of Kevin’s name—feels uniquely hers and hard to imagine anyone else delivering it with the same impact.
